Meet the staff

10.11.22 We have started to learn how to play the ocarina in our music lessons. We are learning to play the song London's Burning and will perform it in our class assembly.

10.11.22. In creative Thursday we finished off our Great Fire of London collage pictures.

03.11.22 In creative Thursday we learnt a Hatherleigh tradition. We all had a go at crepe papering a triangle to make some amazing bunting for Hatherleigh carnival.

06.10.22. We used our marbling from last week to make these amazing weaving pictures.

29.09.22. In music we had fun warming up our faces!

29.09.22- Creative Thursday- we enjoyed marbling using two different techniques.

22.09.22. Creative Thursday. We finished embossing our robots using lots of glue and tin foil.

15.09.22. In creative Thursday we drew robots then added art straws ready to cover in tin foil next week.

9.9.22 - After the sad news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II we watched a video of her life and thought about what an amazing lady she was. We also thought back to the celebrations we held for The Queen's Jubilee. We then discussed what will change from a new King to new words to The National Anthem. We used our learning on 'The Colour Monster' to talk about how we felt. We then used our learning in Creative Thursday to draw and paint portratis of The Queen to go on the school fence as a mark of respect.

08.09.22. In creative Thursday we drew our self portraits. Can you guess who is who?

7.9.22 - We read the book 'The Colour Monster' and thought about how we feel at different times and how colours can represent our feelings. We drew and painted our own colour monsters. In our first 'Welly Wednesday' of the year we then went out to the woodland area and made emotion faces from natural materials.

6.9.22 - We have some reading buddies who have joined us in our reading corner. They like nothing more than to be read too.

5.9.22 - On our first morning back we played 'Summer Holiday Bingo' where we had to walk around the room and find the name of our friends to go in each box on our bingo boards. Categories included someone who had lost a tooth, been on an aeroplane and baked cakes. It gave us a good opportunity to talk to each other to find out what everyone had been up to over the summer.

Welcome to Willows Class!

23.06.22. In computing today we used the online drawing tool kleki to create some sea pictures.

16.06.22- We were very lucky to have Miss Squire to teach some dancing today in creative Thursday and we also had fun weaving. Some amazing sea turtles were created.

09.06.22. Today in Creative Thursday we explored marbling. We had lots of fun using shaving foam and a special marbling set to create some amazing pictures.

7.6.22 - We went to Okehampton Castle as part of our work on local history. We thought about about why the castle was built where it was and looked at the different defensive features it had. We also went on a woodland walk linked to our work on plants in Science.

27.5.22 - Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

19.05.22 Creative Thursday. We have started our Queen's Platinum Jubilee mosaic. Watch out next week for the finished product.

12.05.22. Creative Thursday- we did observational drawings of flowers then watercolour painted them.

24.9.21 - We are learning about materials in Science. To begin our work, Mrs King gave each group a selection of objects and asked us to sort them. We then talked about how the different groups had sorted them, learning the words 'material' and 'properties'.

23.9.21 - In our second Creative Thursday session, we experimented with different joining techniques to help us decide which technique would be the best to use when making our puppets.

22.9.21 - We all really enjoyed, and learnt a lot, in our bat and bug workshop. A big thank you to Jo and Helen from the Devon Wildlife Trust.

21.9.21 - As part of our learning in PSHE Helen and Harold the Giraffe visited our class to help us think about our feelings

Welcome to Willows Class!

2020-2021

Our class - April 2021

Our class - September 2020

28.5.21 As part of a joint project with the National Trust to raise awareness of the importance of sand dunes, all the children got the opportunity to contribute towards painting our school cow. The theme for our cow was wilderness and after looking through initial designs we incorporated forest, Dartmoor and the beach. The cow will be able to be seen at Woolacombe over the Summer - more details to follow when we have them.

13.5.21 - As part of our history topic, we had a very wet visit to Okehampton Castle which was built in the Norman period. We saw first-hand some of the parts of a castle that we had learnt about at school such as the curtain wall, the keep and the great hall. We also enjoyed the woodland walk looking for wild flowers and evergreen and deciduous trees linked to our Science work. We had a great day despite the weather.

12.5.21 - The potatoes we planted a few weeks ago are beginning to grow.

12.5.21 - Our new text in English is 'The Dragon Machine'. During playtime, we were very surprised to spot a tail of a dragon poking out of the bushes. We decided to go on a dragon hunt and found lots more dragons hiding. We also found clues to suggest that there really are dragons living in the school grounds. Next week we are going to use conjunctions and prepositions to create a dragon spotters guide.

6.5.21/7.5.21 - In Science we looked closely at a pansy and identified the roots, stem, leaf, petal and bud. We also did observational drawings of flowers in Creative Thursday and used our colour mixing skills to paint them.

29.4.21 -We drew and painted dragons for our own versions of 'George and the Dragon'. We only used primary colours straight from the pallet, mixing secondary colors using what we learnt in Creative Thursday. We described our dragons using noun phrases and similes.

28.4.21 - This week we have been learning how to place numbers on a number line where only the beginning and end numbers are given.

27.4.21 - Mrs King gave us a picture of the Bayeux Tapestry and asked us to look carefully to see what we thought was happening. We learnt about William the Conqueror and the Battle of Hastings and that the Normans built some of the first castles.

23.4.21 - We planted potatoes in the school garden.

20.4.21- In PSHE we learnt about the learning line and how when we are learning something new we may go into a dip before coming out the other side. We thought about this learning process by throwing and catching a ball but with one hand behind our back.

1.4.21 - It wouldn't be Easter without an Easter Egg hunt!

26.3.21 - With the generous donation that Mr Barkwell and Mr Bowden gave to school, each class has had the chance to work on a creative project over the past three weeks. In Willows we have made mosaics. In week 1, we designed them using squares of paper. In week 2, we copied our designs using the tiles and used tile glue to stick them on. In week 3, we grouted them (not the traditional way of grouting but our technique was much more fun!).

26.3.21 - Our rainforest is looking fantastic with the backdrop we painted together when we returned to school and the projects completed during remote learning.

19.3.21 We have been working hard on fractions this week. We have done lots of different activities including representing fractions in the garden (we know they should be equal parts but that was hard to show with sticks). No fraction work would be complete without food so we also broke chocolate fingers and rich tea biscuits into half and then quarters before eating them.

19.3.21 Red Nose Day

18.3.21 We are very lucky as we have lots of new playground equipment to use at playtimes and lunchtime. A big thank you to the PTFA for raising the money to buy the equipment.

9.3.21 - The daffodils that Mrs Wonnacott helped us to plant in the Autumn Term are flowering.

8.3.21 - Our first day back after lockdown. Lockdown bingo helped us to talk to our friends to find someone who... 'had lost a tooth', ' had celebrated a birthday', had their haircut by a family member' etc. We could only use each name once. In the afternoon, we worked as a class, and in groups, to draw and paint our rainforest display.

17.12.20 - We had lots of fun at our Christmas Party

16.12.20 - Christmas lunch with a surprise visitor

Victorian Day. We had an great day learning about some of the toys and games that children would have played with in the Victorian era. We made cup and balls and played games such as conkers, hopscotch, marbles and hunt the thimble. A big thank you to all the parents for the amazing costumes.

Just before half term, we took part in a multi-skills session led by OCRA.

As part of our learning in PSHE, Gerald the Giraffe and his friends visited us. During the session we thought about the different feelings we experience at different times, what it feels like to be left out and the difference between bullying and teasing.

Creative Thursday is a little different this year as we are doing it in class bubbles rather than moving around the school to different classrooms and teachers. Our first four week block was on textiles and to fit in with our toy topic we made finger puppets. First we looked at a range of different types of puppets. Then we practised different joining techniques to discover what would be the best way of joining our fabric pieces together, We designed our puppets and then made them following our plans.

In English we read the story No-Bot. We learnt the original story including creating freeze frames of key events. We then wrote our own versions starring our own robots that we made.

11.09.2020 We had a wonderful first week as Willows class. We began our unit in maths about place value and used natural objects to represent tens and ones. In English and PSHE we read a book called 'The Colour Monster' and thought about how colours can represent different emotions. We discussed situations when we may feel different emotions and painted our own colour monsters using watercolours.

Meet our school council representatives 2020/2021. We had a class ballot to decide who would be our school council representatives this year. It was a very close run contest but these two children received the most votes and will attend regular meetings with Mr Monger and representatives from the other classes in school.

6th September 2020

Hello Willows,

I hope that you have enjoyed the summer holiday and are looking forward to returning to school tomorrow as a Year 2. We are looking forward to seeing you all.

It was lovely to work with some of you on Thursday's last term but I am sure that, after five months at home or as part of a smaller group in school, you may be feeling a range of different feelings today. Hopefully you will be feeling excited but I expect just like us, you may also be feeling nervous too. This is understandable but together we will get use to the routines and systems and I am sure it won't be long before you are reminding me what time our new break and lunchtimes are or which way we have to walk down the corridor!

I saw a few children in Hatherleigh last week and they told me that they were looking forward to seeing their friends but were worried about the work. We know that this might be a worry for many of you so to begin with we will be recapping many of the skills learnt in Year 1. This will help you to settle in and help us to plan the next steps. The most important thing is that by Friday you still have big smiles on your faces when you leave for the weekend.

So, remember to order your lunches with your grown-ups on the new system and try to have a good nights sleep. We look forward to seeing you at 8.40am tomorrow morning when Mrs Gibb, Mrs Cooper and Mrs Clough will be in the playground to meet you. I will then see you on Tuesday morning at the same time for our first day together.

Mrs King

2019-2020

Dear Willows, Hawthorns and Parents,

Welcome to the last week of term.

On Monday and Tuesday you need to look at the planning for your September class so Willows please visit Poplar's page and then come back here for Wednesday. Post your work on Dojo as normal for Mrs Moss to see (although no doubt we won't be able to resist having a look too!).

'Hello' to Hawthorns. Planning for Monday and Tuesday for you is under the home learning page - week 8, 20.7.20. I will be looking on your Dojo pages so post all of your work here as you normally would. If you are in school, Mrs Fawcett will complete the work with you. Please do take a look at the transition presentation which is also under week 8 and I have posted it on your Dojo class story page too. If you have any questions, do send them through Dojo or email Year2@hatherleigh-pri.devon.sch.uk.

I hope that you all enjoy the last week of term,

With best wishes,

Mrs King

Hello Willows, Barney has sent you a few postcards.

We had a lovely day at Rosemoor learning about woodland invertebrates. In the morning we searched for invertebrates, identified them and made sketches. After lunch we used natural materials to make micro-habitats and walked around the gardens. We ended the day with a play in the brash.

Willows enjoyed celebrating books on World Book Day

Willows class would like to say a massive THANK YOU for the support from parents to allow this amazing and fun packed day to go ahead. Have a look at all the exciting things we did and learnt about the Amazon Rainforest on our trip.
