All teaching and learning of maths at Hatherleigh is based on the principle aims of the national curriculum, for children to become fluent, reasoned problem solvers.

become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Gaining a thorough understanding of each mathematical concept is at the core of maths learning at the school with children’s ability to explain their thinking valued as highly as their ability to perform each task. To this aim we endeavour to make maths practical, relevant and fun using a variety of strategies to engage children and illustrate each concept.

Times Table Rock Stars. As a school, we sign up to Times Table Rock Stars/ Numbots so all the children have their individual log in details. Certificates are awarded weekly in assembly for Story levels completed in Numbots and when a new Studio status is achieved. Studio whole-school leaderboard certicates are awarded on a half termly basis and for the top 3 of each class for improvement and accuracy.
