Music

At Hatherleigh Primary School, we aim to give the children a broad introduction to the music curriculum, providing experience with instruments, singing and performance. Singing is an essential part of a child's development from a really young age, with children responding to music before they can communicate verbally. So, from EYFS, music and songs are embedded in their learning, with rhymes, singing as a class and appreciating being part of a larger group with a Key stage 1 Christmas performance and singing as a whole school in assembly for pleasure and events such as Harvest.

Our curriculum develops from them using untuned percussion instruments to tuned percussion and then learning the ocarina in year 2 as an introduction to musical notation. Experiencing different styles of music is important through Key Stage 2 and they also have whole-class music lessons learning the recorder then the trumpet.
