Music

At Hatherleigh Primary School, we aim to give the children a broad introduction to the music curriculum, providing experience with instruments, singing and performance. Singing is an essential part of a child's development from a really young age, with children responding to music before they can communicate verbally. So, from EYFS, music and songs are embedded in their learning, with rhymes, singing as a class and appreciating being part of a larger group with a Key stage 1 Christmas performance and singing as a whole school in assembly for pleasure and events such as Harvest.

Our curriculum develops from them using untuned percussion instruments to tuned percussion and then learning the ocarina in year 2 as an introduction to musical notation. Experiencing different styles of music is important through Key Stage 2 and they also have whole-class music lessons learning the recorder then the trumpet.

19.5.26 Year 1 and 2 were invited to take part in the singing festival at Winkleigh School today. Along with many other school they have learnt 3 joint songs and then their own individual song.  The children took on the challenge of learning one of the songs in sign language as well.  As a dress rehearsal, they performed their songs to the rest of the school to start our Tuesday assembly.

With money that had been donated from the Spring concert and the remaining  from last Summer's Art exhibition, we have purchased a new set of percussion instruments.
