• Antibullying week and Children in Need

  This week has been really busy with classes focusing on anti-bullying week and Children in Need. As part of recognising that we are all unique, children and staff wore odd socks on Tuesday. Friday involved more dressing up with school supporting Children in Need. Thank you to everyone that helped cover Pudsey in coins. (Photos year 4 and 5)

  

• Hatherleigh Carnival 2024

  This year for our carnival decorated fence entry, we decided to incorporate our flock of sheep (part of the David Jones art project – see previous page of this newsletter) into our design. Each child from Reception to Year 6 used crepe paper to create a flower or a tuft of grass. ‘Grassing’ crepe paper in this way is a traditional technique that Hatherleigh Carnival is renowned for.  We hope you all enjoy looking at our display.

  

• David Jones Art Project

  Hatherleigh school has been generously donated money from the sale of some of David Jones' art work by his daughter Sue. Art and creativity is incredibly important to us at Hatherleigh school and as well as our weekly Creative Thursday lessons we have undertaken several whole school art projects. Being a local artist we wanted to celebrate his artwork with a project that would last and could be seen by the whole community.

  The wooden sheep were made by Ben Whiting and every child contributed to their class sheep. Chestnuts created their colourful design with fingerprints and handprints. Hawthorns were inspired by Van Gogh for their eye-catching sunflower design. Willows have been studying different leaves as part of their art unit this term, and as our classes are named after different trees, carefully drawn and painted leaves were the ideal theme for their class sheep. Poplars took the theme of numbers for their sheep with each child choosing their favourite number. Similarly one of Oaks' sheep is covered in the initial letter of the children's names and their 2^nd sheep was inspired by David Jones'  black and white sketches from around the local area. The inspiration for Beeches striking sheep was Chuck Close. Maples chose to reproduce David Jones colourful style for their intricate sheep. Chloe, one of our keen artists in Y6  wanted to create her own design and produced her own impressive black and white Dartmoor views.  Miss Chauhan saved the last 2 sheep from a life in the art cupboard and painted them over the half term holiday. 

  Steve Attfield then spent 2 days over the holiday attaching them to the fence. Choosing which side to face outwards was tricky as the children have done an incredible job and we're really pleased with their finished result. 

  We would like to express our thanks to Sue Jones and her family for their very kind and generous donation which enabled the children to engage in this amazing art project and create our own school flock which we hope will be enjoyed by the whole community. 

   

  

• Farmwise visit.

  On Wednesday, year 3 and 4 had a visit from Bev who works with the Farmwise outreach team. The children thoroughly enjoyed finding out about different crops grown in Devon, sorting food items into groups of which crops they're made from, matching up different animals to their poo, making flour and they even turned cream into butter. Milking Daisy the cow was quite a challenge but we did have some expert milkers in both classes.
